Jesus’ Secret Goes Public And He Gets Ostracized

From Pastor Todd’s Weekly Email . . .

The secret most often associated with Jesus is referred to as the “Messianic Secret.” That is, it is for some a way to understand those occasions where Jesus heals someone and says, “Don’t tell anyone.” Thus, some read this as a secret. But, something interesting happens where Mark is concerned as he tells the story of Jesus.

Jesus touches the leper. No one touches a leper. To do so meant to be unclean in the same way the leper was unclean. Lepers did not get to go to church (Temple). They did not get to live among others, including family.

The leper becomes clean at the touch of Jesus. Jesus becomes “unclean” touching the leper. Note how Mark tells the story. The now clean leper exclaims that he is now clean. We assume he eventually made his way to the priests to show them he was now clean and not because of anything they had done. He enters the city. He enjoys the company of people. Jesus, on the other hand, is relegated to the dessert places. He can no longer enter towns.

Wow! Mark knows what he is doing when he shows us the very way Jesus takes on our uncleanness and makes us clean. He takes on our experiences of ostracism and becomes ostracized for us. Jesus takes away our loneliness by taking our loneliness. We could go on and on. Jesus liberates, frees, and heals by taking into himself what has kept us from being whole, healed, and in love with God and others.

Jesus invites people into his life and his way. He takes what is and points to the new way of the Kingdom of God.  Come see what this journey is all about!

One way to think about the mission of Jesus - He calls into question the way things are and points to the way things may be in the Kingdom of God.
