Investing in Others … Missions and VBS

Heifer01Our Vacation Bible School gave us the opportunity to invest in young people in our community. Regularly we witness a better than 1:1 worker to children ratio. This year was no different. Many came and gave of their time after long days at the office or with other responsibilities. Investing in relationships represents a significant reason for hosting an annual summer VBS.

The richness of the experience was characterized by Randy. Recently Randy spent two weeks with young people at camp. He sponsored our RA’s at Camp Hudgens and the following week took a group of young Scouts to camp. During dinner one evening Randy noted his dream for his summer work – serve as a summer long sponsor at RA Camp with the provision he could take a week off to come and lead out in VBS. He and Michelle enjoy teaching our 3rd and 4th graders each week in Sunday morning Bible Study.

Investing in relationships provides what a number of youth observers suggest – multiple relationships with adults. Unintentional-intentional  mentoring relationships help both the young person and the adult. Sharing life gives us an occasion to experience life in the Kingdom of God.

Each year we give the young people and opportunity to invest in others giving an offering. In the past we have provided resources for  missionaries in Africa, an orphanage in Guatemala and a missionary in Afghanistan to note just a few. This year our children invested in other children and their families through Heifer International. Mary, our director, put together a poster with pictures of the various gifts people  may give through Heifer.  The hope was we would be able to give at least one gift on the poster. By the end of the week we were able to announce at Family Night we could give  one of each of the gifts illustrated on the poster – cow, sheep, goat, chicks, ducks and honey bees – and then some.

The gift of livestock helping to secure a sustainable source of nourishment helps families around the world. Our young people learned from those who invested in them, ways to invest in others. We pray God uses these gifts to illustrate His gracious love for others through we who follow Jesus.

Jesus invites people into his life and his way. He takes what is and points to the new way of the Kingdom of God.  Come see what this journey is all about!

One way to think about the mission of Jesus - He calls into question the way things are and points to the way things may be in the Kingdom of God.
