Did God do that? … Learning from the Student

Too many of us think once we reach a certain age learning is hard to come by. You know, "You can’t teach an old dog new tricks." Spend Sundays with children and you will not only be worn ragged by their energy, you will be sharpened by their conversations.

Last evening Jeanene shared a conversation from her class. The children were asked to name what they have learned God did/does. Each child responded in different ways. The main story for the Sunday was the story of God parting the Red Sea. One of the children replied, "God closed the Red Sea." Lovingly Jeanene directed the replies toward the element in the story illustrating God’s wonder, "parting the Red Sea." The child again replied, "God closed the Red Sea." Still hoping to make the point of the story as presented the child was reminded God parted the Sea. Ever insistence, as pre-schoolers may be, the child continued to insist, "God closed the Red Sea."

After a moment the insistence became clear – God did both! He parted and he closed. And, as the story goes, had he not closed the Red Sea, the point of him parting it would not have mattered.

We always have lots to learn. Never exclude the manner in which your learning may come.

Jesus invites people into his life and his way. He takes what is and points to the new way of the Kingdom of God.  Come see what this journey is all about!

One way to think about the mission of Jesus - He calls into question the way things are and points to the way things may be in the Kingdom of God.
