Worship with Us This Sunday - 10:15 a.m.
Green bananas. Yellow bananas. Black bananas. Which banana would you buy? Green bananas need a bit more time to ripen. Yellow bananas are good to the eye and ready to eat. Black bananas are over-ripe and may only be good for banana pudding, if that. The colors of bananas help us understand the progress of the fruit beneath the skin.
One of the readings for the Second Sunday in Advent includes John the Baptizer undoing the Pharisees. He notes, "Bear fruit in keeping with repentance." (Matt. 3:8) Turning toward Jesus may be described as an inward turn. Following in the way of Jesus results in a "ripening" apparent in the character of the follower.
Following the metaphor on to another level we could suggest our lives are sweeter as we continue to ripen. Our character continues to experience a reform whereby the life of Jesus continues to enter the world through those who follow Jesus. The Apostle Paul lists the "fruit" of the work of the Spirit expressing the character of Jesus in any context and any epock.
Continue to ripen in keeping with the turn toward Jesus you have made when you find Him to be the One under whose rule and reign you live.
