Advent, Week 3 – Thursday – Others

Thursday, Week 3

Scripture Reading
I Thessalonians 5:16-24

16 Rejoice always, 17 pray without ceasing, 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 19 Do not quench the Spirit. 20Do not despise prophecies, 21but test everything; hold fast what is good. 22Abstain from every form of evil.

23Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24 He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it.

The beginning of this scripture makes me think of Thanksgiving.  In the past this holiday has always been about the food to me.  Although, last year it became so much more than who baked the best turkey.  Through my school I was given the opportunity to get in touch with some families that needed some help providing Thanksgiving dinner for their families.  One woman I spoke with had no idea she would be receiving a basket full of food to have a dinner on Thanksgiving.  She was so over whelmed she began to cry.  It was at that moment that Thanksgiving became more than just a holiday to me, it was an opportunity to reach out to those who are less fortunate than me.

Advent Season gives us all reason to find ways to reach out to others. When Jesus came, we were the “others.”

Jesus invites people into his life and his way. He takes what is and points to the new way of the Kingdom of God.  Come see what this journey is all about!

One way to think about the mission of Jesus - He calls into question the way things are and points to the way things may be in the Kingdom of God.
